Yamato 400-794 AD
The Yamato were the first ruling dynasty of Japan, and claimed to be born of the sun. Technically they were never overthrown, although they did not have contol of the country at all times. The people who took the reins are called the Fujiwara Shogonate.

Fujiwara Shogunate 794 -1183 AD

The Fujiwara took over the counrty, but left the Yamato as the leaders. They undertood that if they were to kill the Emporer, the people would revolt or be furious with them. Instead, they forced him to appoint their leaders to the office of Shogun, which was the supreme leader of the military. Because the people thought that the Emporer liked them, they did not rebel. The Shogun ruled with an iron fist, using feudalism and training the Japanese warriors known as Samurai who fought mostly with swords. These warriors followed a moral code like that of chivalry called Bushido. The Shogun also moved the capitol to Kyoto to help trade. The Yamato's Court became extremely dull without any real things to do, so they spent their time devoting themselves to the arts and other ceremonial services such as the Tea Ceremony, which was the ceremony of pouring tea for others. The Yamamoto became extremely rule based and focused a lot on etiquette. They also had the time to practice real Japanese writting as most works were not written in Japanese because it was unlegible by outsiders.  The Yamamoto women wrote a book called "The Tale of Gensi", that was the first great novel written in Japanese. Eventually the feudal system broke down with the peasants not giving loyalty anymore. Another Shogunate took their place and came to power.

Kamakura Shogunate 1183 - 1281 AD

The Kamakura took the reins from the Fugiwara Shogunate, and so they too realized that they required the Emoporer's aproval and endorsement if they were to rule. The Kamakura kept the Yamamoto intact as the figure heads and did almost the same as the Fugiwara with their shogunate. Because they were scared of taxing too much and having the peasants rebel they payed their soldiers very little. Then came the mogol invasions, but it was a hard and long war. Although they did win it took a lot of money and man power to do so. Most of their samurai went home because the Government couldnt pay them. This resulted in a power vacuum that ended their reign.
