Wendi built the Grand canal, which connected the Huang He and the Chang Jiang. As a coin has two sides, the Grand canal also had it own advantages and disadvantages. It provided a vital route for trade between the northern cities and the southern cities. In addition, it also made the transportation between north and south more quickly and efficiently. For example, it helped transports the rice grew in south where had more warm climate and was more suitable for farming to north where lacked the food. However, a million peasant men and women toiled five years to dig the more than 1000-mile waterway and many people died. The increasing discontent caused people revolt at the end
Wendi 581-618
An emperor named Wendi united northern and southern China and declared himself as the first emperor of Sui dynasty. The dynasty lasted through only two emperors, from 581-618.
Wendi also built the Great Wall. The purpose for rebuilding it was good, since the Great Wall can help protect the citizens and defeat the enemies. But people were forced to pay high tax and they also needed to build the wall as the labor after they pay the tax. Thousands more died rebuilding the Great Wall. Because of overtaxed and overworked, people, finally,revolted. In 618, a member of the imperial court assassinated the second Sui emperor. Thus, the Sui Dynasty ended.
